Philosopher in the House!

by Carol Quinn

I’ve always wanted to know a philosopher. Imagine being able to make a quick call to learn the origins of a particular theory, to get the ancients’ perspective on an ethical dilemma or to discover exactly how derivative a seemingly original idea might be.

Hi!  Can you share a good quote about wisdom?

“The mark of wisdom is to read aright the present, and to march with the occasion.” Homer

Thanks!

There are so many ideas that come to mind during any given day, projects I am just beginning, ventures I am considering and, in my fiction writing, concepts and characters I am starting to form. The underlying question for me is always: does this idea stand up to scrutiny; is there a sound philosophical root to support this concept? Is this character based in reality? Is my thinking correct?

Imagine my extreme happiness when I discovered the contemporary philosopher, Dr. Tom Morris (@TomVMorris) on Twitter. Hah! A philosopher in the house!

Former professor, author of twenty books, inspirational speaker and founder of the Morris Institute of Human Values, Tom Morris provides thought-provoking insights on a daily basis via Twitter and has written a new book about his experiences: TWISDOM: A Philosopher Ponders Life in 140 Characters Or Less.

TWISDOM isn’t a simple collection of tweets from a contemporary philosopher; it’s a handbook on how to interpret current events in a philosophical context, how to relate to others in a kind, thoughtful, collegial and inspiring way and, most importantly, how to think, live, be and act. The book is filled with illuminating insights meant to be read over and over…and once more with feeling.

So, what is the philosopher Tom Morris’s opinion of 3Lunches? “Love it! Innovative and natural…and addresses a multiplicity of needs.”

Excellent!

While TWISDOM chronicles Tom’s first ten weeks on Twitter, it is an up-close-and-personal examination of the creative process of change and education. Any person embarking on the 3Lunches coaching process with a friend will recognize in Tom Morris’s narrative of tweets the uncertainty, the hint of self-consciousness, the humor, the ah-ha moment of clarity, the exuberant joy of discovery, and on to confidence, grace and expansion. This book is a testament to how we grow. And it’s exactly what we expect from the process of 3Lunches, which is a pressure cooker for growth and change.

And why might those coaching via 3Lunches have TWISDOM on hand? Because it gives access to a treasury of practical wisdom offered by Tom Morris and from great philosophers through the ages whose insights still have relevance for many of the problems we face today. Tom Morris provides thought-provoking insights on clarity, confusion, character, appearance, reality, uncertainty and confidence.

The Forewords to the book are written by Kathy Ireland and Mariel Hemingway: two women of extraordinary grace, good purpose, right action and accomplishment.

TWISDOM is also quite funny; it’s filled with humorous anecdotes, an occasional joke, and the kind of self-deprecating humor that goes straight to the heart of how complex and joyful it is for all of us to be here on this planet, at this moment in time.

All that’s left to say is: read the book. Then, with the book in hand, arrange your 3Lunches, go help someone overcome an obstacle, go test out a new business idea with a friend, and feel free to use a bit of philosophy along the way.

“The whole idea of 3Lunches is to share questions, reflections, insights, advice, and encouragement. And that’s exactly what I try to do in the new book, TWISDOM. I think the book could be a sort of handbook of preparation for getting the most out of the 3Lunches process. Time Magazine was right, Twitter does have unexpected depth. And so does 3Lunches!”

Thanks for commenting, Michelle. I can’t think of a better degree than Philosophy to teach thinking skills. Bravo to you for your determination! And thanks for the nice words :)

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and… yep, you guessed it, Philosophy! As a scholarship kid, I had to fight the powers-that-be to let me take Philosophy in the first place, let alone major in it. They didn’t consider it in any way useful for any kind of career (my scholarship required me to satisfy such criteria which is why I doubled up my workload in my degree year by also taking a full major in English Literature). As it turned out, they were wrong. My Philosophy education is essential to me as a writer; by informing my thinking, it informs my writing.nCongratulations on finding your own Philosopher online – you’re a very smart cookie and I wish you well with your writing, as with all things you do, in the future!
