    The best way I have found that you can connect with people on Twitter is to help others by dispensing advice in a subject you are fluent in. For example, I made some great connections by going into Twitter Search and typing “WordPress Help” I answer people’s questions or “@” them and ask what the problem is. My years of experience means I have banged my head on the keyboard plenty of times and can save them from that experience. This in turn has lead to connections to people in similar fields such as graphic design and PR as well as things I know little about such as pilates and biology. It has lead to a couple of freelance gigs, but it also gives me someone not in my immediate circle I can bounce ideas off of or ask questions I may not have gotten answered otherwise.

    for me integration is the key – they must all reflect the aspect of me relevant to that mode and I choose each mode based on who seek to connect with.

    Twitter, give and receive timely information and connect with people who are local to me and/or are in the same field as I am, overall people from all walks.

    Facebook is more for the users of my product(s)and to connect with them and give them what they want.

    LinkedIn is more for my professional alliances and suppliers, this is very narrow and focused.

    I want to get better at making connections that i can give and receive value.

    Social networks allow different levels of visibility of people having a certain interest, if I’d like to join my college group on facebook I just have to check the profile of my classmates and see what groups/networks they are part of easily and pick my college’s group, so I’ll have a new level of visibility of people, because I’ll see other college my college’s students on the group and connect with them. The same applies to find all communities of interest, it’s all about moving from a level of visibility to another (from a friend to a community for example and so on). These levels of visibility are continuous and infinite, for example I can get to a business group through my colleague and then find an interesting person in that group, and through this person I might access new communities and get to know more people having the desired interest… Here you can see that I have used multiple levels of visibility: Friend > Group > person > Group.. And so on, that’s the true power of social networks, they allow infinite levels of visibility that we can control and manage very easily.

    In using Twitter to access online communities of interest, I would start out, as Andrew mentioned above, by searching for people who are talking about the relevant keyword or keywords. From there, I would have a look at the kind of sites that these people are linking to, and talking about, and have a look at who is commenting on those sites, and if they, too, have twitter.

    From there, I would start “following” those people, and asking / answering questions that are on-topic for that community of interest. I might even coin some hash tags that would relate to the topic I’m interested in, so that other people can easily find the discussion, and the group of people who are twittering on this topic.

    From there, I might set up a page or group on one of the other social networking sites so that we can further build our community.
