Are You On the List?

by Carol Quinn

I love lists. Life seems so much more manageable when all the things I have to do are out of my head and down on paper, preferably typed—and numbered.

Yay! I crossed off number 1!

I feel a sense of relief when I complete a task. The list gets shorter. I get happier. I sleep better at night. And when the list is completed, I make a new one.

Relationships don’t fit on lists, though. It would be really odd to type: 1.) Show love to___

But responsibilities and obligations to the people in our lives can sometimes cause as much anxiety as a stack of unpaid bills. Sometimes more. That’s just wrong.

When life is packed with things “to do”, it takes a special effort to ensure that the people in our lives don’t end up on that list.

How do you keep work/life demands separate from your relationships?  Is it easy for you? Any tips to share? Or maybe you feel like you’ve been placed on a loved one’s list?

Making a list does two things.  First, you accept responsibility for a set of tasks, including those easy to put off and in the “one of these days” file.  Second, you have an opportunity, actually a requirement, to prioritize.  When “get a job” or “back up blog” show up on the same list as “iron and fold underwear” you instinctively see a path.
